'T-Man' Ayres excellent run in the Rileys UK Open Championship at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton
finally came to an end at the Semi-Finals stage this evening when he
lost out to Scottish number one Gary Anderson 10-3. His performance
in the semis didn't match the previous rounds but Sussex will be
proud of his efforts over the past few days. This afternoon he beat world number three James Wade 10-9 in the
Quarter-Finals. Having taken an early 3-0 lead Ayres missed a dart
at double top to go four up but took the next to lead 4-1 at the
first break. The legs then went with throw in the second session as
T-Man went into the next break 6-4 up. Ayres then made a mistake in
the next leg as he hit the wrong double but eventually took the leg
on his next throw to lead 7-4. Wade won the next with throw before
Ayres set himself up on 24 with a score of 177 only for the
Aldershot man to take out 101 finishing on double top. Ayres
responded superbly in the next leg hitting 140, 100, 140, 57 and
took out 64 in two darts to break back. T-Man then missed five darts
at a double in the next leg to go within a leg of victory. Going
into the final session with an 8-7 lead, all looked lost for the Billingshurst man when Wade took the next two legs to lead 9-8 and
started the next with a 180. Wade then missed three darts at a
double and Ayres took out a superb 152 finish to take the match to a
decider. The former Crawley super league player then took advantage
of the throw with scores of 100, 134, 134, 97 to set up double 18
for the match. One dart was all he needed with Wade back on
181. Ayres got to the Quarters with wins against Paul Whitworth 6-4,
Pete Fisher 9-3, Mark Walsh 9-7 and Alan Tabern 9-5.. |
